The Eatery, the iPhone app that helps keep your sweet tooth in check

Every day thousands of people upload to their Instagram, Foursquare, Twitter or Facebook profiles photographs of these succulent dishes or original culinary presentations that they are going to enjoy after the quick shot with their mobile phone camera. The Eatery, a free application for the iPhone, created so those who like to eat control their diet better, takes advantage of all of this.

This study is based on studies which state that the simple fact of taking photographs of what they eat helps people lose weight. The mechanism is simple: The application offers the option of showing where you are and creating your profile. You take photos of the treats you are thinking of eating, you classify this food in a rank from the most to least healthy (scale from 0 to 100); finally, this photo and opinion is shared with other users or friends and they can decide whether this food is healthy or not. In this way, different opinions are obtained about your personal choice and you can assess how objective your thoughts are in the face of the temptations offered by our wealth of gastronomy.

The application also shows a “calorie counter” that tells us if we are eating appropriately each day and shows us where we should make changes to improve our health. We can also classify others’ food, from yoghurts to complicated dishes.

User voting is fast and in just a few minutes you can obtain the first responses. These minutes will be difficult for food lovers, but this is also the joy of the application.

Likewise, this application encourages its users to eat healthily, as the foods they ingest is really being judged. You can also create a link with Facebook to see what your friends are sharing and eating, a detailed record of the habits of each user where you can observe behaviour such as what time they eat fattier foods or what is the favourite time of the day to have a coffee. The weekly classification on the way the user is eating can be used, and in this way goals for improvement can be set.

The company that created The Eatery (Massive Health), in its effort to instil good eating habits, conducted a study of all users of this application throughout the world and the conclusion drawn was that the food most eaten was salad, chicken and cheese.
According to the study, the country where the healthiest food is eaten is Denmark, for its consumption of rye, onion, cabbage and almonds.
